The skin and fur of companion animals — dogs, cats, and horses — harbor complex microbial ecosystems that are central to skin barrier function, immune modulation, and protection against pathogens. These microbiomes differ fundamentally from the human skin microbiome in composition, pH, and sensitivity to environmental perturbation. Disruption of the microbial balance (dysbiosis) is consistently associated with allergic skin diseases, pyoderma, and secondary infections in all three species. Despite the growing market for pet grooming and care products, regulatory frameworks for pet cosmetics remain far less stringent than those governing human personal care products. Ingredient safety assessment, post-market surveillance, and labeling requirements are largely absent or fragmented for pet-specific formulations. This gap creates measurable risks: shampoos and grooming aids formulated without microbiome consideration may actively promote dysbiosis in animals with already sensitive skin barriers. To address this, MyMicrobiome AG developed the world’s first microbiome-friendly certification standards for companion animals (Standards 58.10 for dogs and 59.10 for horses), based on original research involving 40 dogs and 14 horses and validated by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA sequencing. This article summarizes the current scientific understanding of pet skin microbiomes, the regulatory landscape, and the case for microbiome-protective certification in the pet care industry.
