Microbiological Tasks in the Cosmetics Area – Why a Holistic Working Attitude is Needed

Microbiological tasks must be fulfilled during development, manufacturing and marketing of cosmetic products. They need to make sure that quality and safety demands are reliably met. Since such activities are localized in different processes, working with a holistic attitude is essential. The basis for such working attitude is the application of a quality management system (MQM), which also implies the use of a continuous risk management and qualification requirements for the microbiologically working personnel. This way it can be guaranteed that adequate microbiological demands are taken into account for the definition of processes and measures and that quality criteria are fulfilled, which are also the basis of the microbiological product safety. The system should ensure the communication of relevant results and findings and the installation of an adequate change control, to make sure that the expert decisions are applied and become effective in all parts of the system. Examples of microbiological tasks are given, which significantly depend upon working with a holistic view (e.g. definition of relevant processes and measures, detection of risks and performing efficient counter measures).
