Glycolic acid is a widely used exfoliating ingredient in skincare, traditionally derived from petrochemical sources using formaldehyde or monochloroacetic acid.
As consumer demand for clean, sustainable beauty intensifies, bio-based glycolic acid has emerged as a high-performance alternative that addresses safety, sustainability, and transparency.
This paper explores how bio-based glycolic acid, produced through microbial fermentation, achieves comparable efficacy to conventional glycolic acid while reducing environmental impact and eliminating toxic by-products. Through comparative data on purity, carbon footprint, and irritation profiles, we demonstrate the feasibility of bio-based glycolic acid as a drop-in replacement in formulations.
As a case example, we examine Purolic™, a 100% bio-based formulation, to highlight broader industry implications.
