Keeping toilets clean and free of clogs is a priority. Beneficial bacteria that secrete enzymes, biosurfactants and other biomolecules are already used in many industries and applications. In particular, organisms from the genus Bacillus have a long history of safe use, are widespread in nature, and produce a multitude of cleaning and anti-clogging enzymes. Moreover, Bacillus can form spores, a life cycle stage in which they are dormant, and resistant to environmental stressors, permitting shelf stability in a formulation, and activation in application. By incorporating Bacillus spores into a toilet care in-tank cube, we show that the product delivers a flush-by-flush release of microbes that enables long-lasting, self-activated cleaning and anti-clogging benefits, surpassing the performance of conventional quick-action cleaning agents. Through targeted microbe selection and formulation optimization, the product remains shelf-stable while promoting probiotic activity in the toilet environment, including enzyme secretion and resilience to environmental stressors. As in many applications, nature offers sustainable solutions that make toilet care more effective and less of a chore.
