Mannosylerythritol and Cellobiose Lipids: Biosurfactants of the Future?

S. Rechtsteiner, S. Münßinge, S. Zibek

The microbially produced biosurfactants mannosylerythritol lipids (MEL) and cellobiose lipids (CL) represent bio-based alternatives to conventional surfactants. Due to their structural variability, their physicochemical properties are influenced, making them potentially interesting for a range of applications. This article provides an overview of the current state of research on structural variability, fermentation, and process development for the production of MEL and CL, as well as selected chemical, antimicrobial, and application-relevant properties. Furthermore, selected results from investigations into detergents and cleaning agents as well as metalworking fluids are presented.
