Evaluating an Ester-Based Cleaning Booster for Enhanced Removal of Tough Hard Surface Soils

D. Ganchev

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an ester-based cleaning booster in enhancing the removal of tough, baked-on soils from hard surfaces within household cleaning formulations. The research focused on the incorporation of a proprietary ester-based solvent into typical surfactant systems, aiming to reduce user effort and improve cleaning performance against soils known for their complex, cross-linked composition derived from food residues. Experimental methods included both qualitative and quantitative evaluations: pilot tests using manual cleaning to simulate consumer experience, and controlled laboratory experiments using a TQC Washability Tester to ensure reproducibility of mechanical action. Cleaning efficacy was assessed via gravimetric (mass loss) and photometric (dE value) measurements on standardized soil monitors representing a range of challenging residues. Main observations revealed that the ester-based booster significantly increased soil removal across all tested soil types and surfactant systems, with formulations containing the additive outperforming controls, even at lower surfactant concentrations. This effect was consistent for both hand dishwash and hard surface cleaning products. The ester-based ingredient was also noted for its biodegradability, aligning with sustainability trends. In conclusion, the ester-based booster offers a robust, eco-friendly solution for improving cleaning efficacy, formulation flexibility, and consumer satisfaction in household cleaning applications.
