The Effect of Black Seed Oil Scalp Lotion On Hair Density and Hair Loss Reduction: A Controlled Instrumental Assessment

O. Kalinowska, L. von Oppen-Bezalel

Black seed oil (BSO), obtained from Nigella sativa seeds, is rich in thymoquinone (TQ) and known for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. A standardized cold-pressed BSO containing 3 % TQ and 2 % free fatty acids demonstrates boosting activity of mitochondrial functions, protective activity against oxidative and inflammatory damage in skin and scalp. his study evaluated the cosmetic efficacy of B’UTYQUIN 5 % Scalp Lotion, containing standardized BSO, on hair density and hair-loss reduction over 28 days. Twenty-two volunteers with self-reported hair loss applied the product once daily. Efficacy was assessed using instrumental trichoscopy (Aramo ASW 300F) and a standardized dry hair-loss test; subjective tolerance and perception were evaluated via questionnaire. After 28 days, hair shedding decreased by 35 % (Δ = –9 hairs), while mean hair density increased by 7 % (+ 9.7 hairs/cm2). All participants showed improvement. Dermatological evaluation confirmed excellent tolerance, with no irritation or adverse reactions. Questionnaire data indicated high consumer satisfaction, with > 80 % of users confirming visible reduction in hair loss and strengthened hair. The formulation was perceived as gentle, moisturizing, and easy to apply. These findings support B’UTYQUIN 5 % Scalp Lotion as a safe, well-tolerated topical treatment that effectively reduces hair loss and enhances scalp health.
