Embracing Age with Confidence: Clariant‘s Innovative Approach to Hair Care

Interview with: Petra Kudla, Global Marketing Manager Hair Care
Clariant

Petra Kudla discusses how Clariant‘s new Heritage Bloom concept is redefining beauty standards for aging hair through innovative formulations. Petra serves as Global Marketing Manager Hair Care within Clariant‘s Care Chemicals business unit. With extensive experience in the personal care industry, she leads the development of innovative hair care solutions that address evolving consumer needs. In this interview, she discusses Clariant‘s new Heritage Bloom concept, which offers a fresh perspective on caring for aging hair.

Could you tell us about the inspiration behind Clariant‘s new Heritage Bloom concept and how it addresses changing perspectives on aging in the beauty industry?

The Heritage Bloom concept emerged from our observation of a significant shift in the beauty market. We‘ve moved from traditional anti-aging approaches to what we now call „slow beauty“ or proactive preventive aging. Consumers are no longer looking for quick fixes when they spot a wrinkle or gray hair. Instead, they‘re adopting more deliberate, long-term strategies to maintain their appearance. The concept is built around the idea that age should just be a number, with your hair maintaining its blooming glow regardless of your birthday. We wanted to create innovative solutions for ageless hair beauty that align with this new consumer mindset, where feeling good about yourself translates to confidence that others can see.

What specific age-related hair concerns does the Heritage Bloom concept address, and how did you identify these as key areas to target?

Through our market research, we identified four primary concerns that people experience as their hair ages. First is increased frizz and decreased manageability – hair simply becomes more difficult to style. Second is a greater need for hydration, as aging hair tends to become drier. Third is thinning, particularly noticeable in the front hairline for many people. And finally, there‘s a noticeable lack of shine or gloss that makes hair appear duller over time. These concerns aren‘t just cosmetic – they affect how people feel about themselves daily. Heritage Bloom specifically targets these issues with formulations designed to challenge the test of time and slow down these visible signs of aging in hair.

Could you walk us through the five formulations in the Heritage Bloom concept and explain how they work together as a comprehensive hair care system?

We‘ve developed five complementary formulations that work together to address different aspects of aging hair. The Noble Grace Shampoo targets frizz and shine issues combining a range of our mild surfactants, like Glucotain Flex and Hostapon CCG, with Actimilk Argan as anti-frizz agent. The Miracle Elixir Endless Radiance highlights gloss, provides conditioning and radiance through Genadvance SPA.

For deep hydration, we‘ve created the Endless Luxe Revival Food Mask which uses a combination of Genadvance SPA, Genadvance Hydra and natural emollients for deep conditioning of aging hair.

The Endless Thriving Beauty Hair Regrowth Serum addresses thinning with hair growth agent Capixyl while maintaining a natural texture via our biodegradable thickener Aristoflex Eco T.

Finally, our Endless Royal Glow Scalp Serum bridges skin and hair care with Genadvance Hydra as silicone replacement, and Amisol Trio P against fly-away hair. Together, these formulations provide a comprehensive approach to maintaining beautiful hair regardless of age.

How does the Heritage Bloom concept reflect the trend towards other multifunctional beauty products?

Consumers today are overwhelmed by the sheer number of products marketed to them. While it might be good for business to sell 20 different products to each person, the reality is that most consumers won‘t use that many. Heritage Bloom embraces sophisticated efficacy through multifunctionality. For example, our Miracle Elixir provides gloss and conditioning in one product. Our scalp serum addresses both scalp health and hair manageability simultaneously. By creating products that serve multiple purposes, we‘re meeting the realistic needs of consumers who want effective solutions without cluttering their bathrooms with countless products. This approach also aligns with sustainability goals by potentially reducing overall product consumption.

You mentioned that the Heritage Bloom concept combines products from both Clariant‘s traditional portfolio and the Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant portfolio. How does this integration enhance the effectiveness of the formulations?

The integration of Clariant‘s portfolio with the actives from Lucas Meyer Cosmetics represents a significant strength of the Heritage Bloom concept. By combining our complementary technologies, we‘ve created formulations that benefit from the best of both worlds. For example, in our Food Mask, we‘ve paired Clariant‘s conditioning agents with emollients from Lucas Meyer Cosmetics. This integration allows us to address multiple aspects of aging hair simultaneously – from surface concerns like frizz to deeper issues like hair re-growth and scalp health. It also demonstrates how we‘ve successfully bridged our innovative cultures to create solutions that neither portfolio could achieve alone. The result is a more comprehensive and effective approach to aging hair care.

The beauty industry has traditionally focused anti-aging products on skin care. Why do you believe there‘s an opportunity specifically in the hair care segment for age-focused products?

While anti-aging has dominated skin care for decades, the hair care segment has been relatively underserved, particularly for consumers aged 45 and above. This represents a significant opportunity. Hair changes are just as visible as skin changes – perhaps even more so – yet haven‘t received the same level of targeted innovation. When we look at current hair care marketing, very few brands position their products specifically for aging hair concerns, despite the fact that these concerns affect millions of consumers. Our market research indicates that consumers are actively seeking solutions for their changing hair but aren‘t finding products specifically formulated for their needs. Heritage Bloom fills this gap by directly addressing the unique challenges of aging hair with formulations designed specifically for this purpose.

What role does scalp care play in the Heritage Bloom concept, and why is it important to include this aspect in a comprehensive hair aging solution?

Scalp care is absolutely essential to any modern hair care concept, especially when addressing aging concerns. The scalp is essentially the soil from which hair grows – if it‘s not healthy, the hair won‘t be either. Our Endless Royal Glow Scalp Serum recognizes this connection by bridging skin care and hair care approaches. As we age, the scalp undergoes changes similar to facial skin, including decreased oil production and reduced cell turnover. These changes directly impact hair growth and quality. By including dedicated scalp care in Heritage Bloom, we‘re addressing the root causes of many aging hair concerns, not just treating the symptoms. The serum‘s formulation is carefully balanced to nourish the scalp without leaving hair greasy, using silicone replacements like Gendavance Hydra that benefit both the skin and the hair growing from it.

What has been the initial response to the Heritage Bloom concept from your customers, and how do you see it fitting into their product development strategies?

The initial response has been extremely positive. Our customers – the brands and manufacturers who will ultimately bring these formulations to consumers – recognize the opportunity in the aging hair care segment. They appreciate that we‘ve developed not just individual ingredients but complete formulation concepts that they can adapt to their specific brand identities. Several customers have already expressed interest in incorporating ingredients showcased in Heritage Bloom into their upcoming product launches:

Glucotain Flex for example is one of our mild surfactants that is providing a creamy, nourishing foam, while Genadvance SPA is a plant-based conditioning agent for silky smoothness and shine that provides excellent frizz control. Genadvance Hydra is also a conditioning agent that envelopes strands in softness adding luxurious shine similar to silicone while being 100% naturally-derived and biodegradable.

What‘s particularly exciting is seeing how different customers are adapting the concept to their unique market positions – some focusing on the luxury self-care aspect, others on the scientific efficacy, and still others on the natural ingredients. This versatility demonstrates the strength of the concept and ingredients, and its relevance across different market segments within the broader personal care industry.
